It's been predictably chaotic around here...
Finally found a terminal to work from!

Norway's rehearsal was a bit of a mess, really - so much so that he was allowed an extra couple of runthroughs later on. Looks like there were masses of technical problems. As for Jostein himself, it's hard to say. I thought he was pretty much replicating his national final performance - but that means flat and uninteresting. I'm not prepared to stick my neck out, really.

France is a lovely song, and Louisa... well, again I'm not sure. Something wasn't really there and I can't think what it was. It was five rehearsals ago - you have to make allowances for me!

Poland's rehearsals were fabulous. Michal looks and sounds as scary as ever - sort of like Lou's evil twin - but it works. The stage looks fantastic, and he uses it well too; he's the first person to start off standing on the ramp behind the stage, and he tried out several options for charging around in the later part of the song. Eastern votes will get this into the Top 10. It's not out of the question that Western votes might take it higher than that.

Then we come to Russia. Nobody's ever seen that many people at a rehearsal, and it started to look like they'd have nothing to see as the girls were late turning up. They missed their soundcheck, the floor manager had terrible trouble keeping assorted hangers-on off the stage, and the net result was one and a half incomplete runthroughs which told us next to nothing - except the lighting director seems to have completely lost any sense of self-control, and that tATu aren't all that fabulous as live performers.

Belgium was bound to be a comedown after that, but it's a nice song, they perform very much like the trad music group they are, the girl sings well, and I'm quite happy with it.

I was dragged kicking and screaming from the Estonian rehearsal by my esteemed managing editor who wanted food (I think he wanted to get away from the Estonian rehearsal though). I still like this bunch of herberts. They've lost the overly busy ending from the preview version, and much to my delight they will be wearing the shirts and ties. Therefore, so will I! I've regained my keenness for it, I really have. It's likely to threaten, you mark my words.

You can say hi to [info]oneurope yourself, if you like! :-)

And yes, tATU was just everything you might have predicted. Still not prepared to definitively say "Yes, they will be there on Saturday night".

Just to let you know that I'm reading (and enjoying) your log.

Can't see how Estonia can be a threat, but there again, I'm not there. I'm most intrigued how everyone's attitude towards Lou has changed. Shame it'll probably suffer the fate of most fan favourites (but it isn't even a fan favourite...)

I'm really enjoying these reports of yours. I particularly like the way that you seem to like the vast majority of songs; it's a little worrying that one of the few that you have spoken badly of is ours. I'm also a little concerned that your betting patterns do not appear to match up with either your pre-Riga predictions or your Riga-inspired views, but that's not important right now.

What are the other folks in the press office like - big fans, real journalists or what?

Now look, I *have* warned you previously that I'm the most inept gambler in the world! :-)

Trouble is, I wasn't really able to call the shots before I got here, and quite frankly I still can't. Not sure that I could even make anything a certainty for Top 10 just now - it's a very very even field.

The press office is mostly big fans for the most part, but most of them do seem to have found genuine media outlets that they're working for. Julie Wright (aka Bossyboots) has apparently submitted some freelance copy to The Sun praising the tATu shambles to the skies - brilliantly, the tabloids didn't manage to get their people accredited because tATu weren't announced until after the deadline for pre-accreditation! Do keep an eye out for that tomorrow.

Allowing for the fact the Russian rehearsal may have been a carefully choreographed complete shambles, ours was the worst of the 26 in my view.

Anyhoo, must go and wrap-up the day's final rehearsals...

Thanks for all your commentary, Nick. Following an earlier tip off, I have been reading your notes, very useful (planning to submit my predictions to various web comps later!)

Just waiting for the last three countries to come on!

Hiya...

Not managed to do a lot in the way of parties so far, though hopefully tonight there's plenty on! Euroclub is at the Reval Hotel Latvija's "Voodoo" nightclub. I haven't been thus far, and apparently it's... interesting.

It's going to step up a gear on Thursday, isn't it? :-)

Absolutely Nick. I think the plane will be disgorging a phalanx of late comers who will descend on Riga like a wolf on the fold!

Keep it up. I am sooooooooooooooo jealous of you already. And Alf sounds a marvel

I don't know if Riga is ready for all this disgorgement - please be gentle with us poor humble members of Her Majesty's Press! :-)
